Get Ready for Winter with Don Jacobs

Wednesday, December 18th, 2019

The harshest time of the year for vehicles has arrived here in Central Kentucky. Freezing temperatures may lead to some unexpected issues for drivers. Never fear, we are here to help!  Simply plan ahead for icy conditions with a service reservation at Don Jacobs and at home preparations before you’re sliding off the road.

Prep with Service

The best move you can do right now is scheduling a service reservation at one our three service centers here in Lexington[link]. When you bring your vehicle in, we will be able to address any of your regular maintenance needs:

  • Oil change & Oil Filter
  • Rotate, balance, align tires
  • Inspection of belts, hoses, tires, heating systems, defroster, four-wheel drive system, and battery

On top of that, we will also perform a visual multi-point inspection to identify potential concerns in the coming months. Are your wipers showing signs of wear and tear? Or do you need to swap out your tires for some that can better tackle icy roads? With our parts center on site, we have you covered with any supplies you may need.

Prep at Home

Making sure your vehicle is up to snuff goes beyond a service reservation though. Here are some additional tips that you can do from home:

  • Monitor tire pressureWe talked previously about how colder weather may bring lower tire pressures. It’s important to check this once a month even after your normal service reservations.  Many newer models allow you to check this out with a touch of a button.
  • Apply wax to your vehicle – Road salt and dirt from snow plows will be spraying all over your vehicle in the winter. Before the cold weather starts, apply a fresh coat of wax to protect it from these conditions. Be sure to focus on the lower parts of the vehicle: behind the wheels, quarter panels, and the front grille.
  • Check headlights and brake lights – A given though the year for when you drive at night, these lights become even more important during the winter months. With heavy snow fall obscuring visibility, your lights will help alert other drivers of your presence when they normally can’t. Are the covers hazy and discolored? Kits are available to make them as good as new!

Summer Maintenance Checks

Tuesday, July 9th, 2019

Summer is in full swing and families are about to start on their summer road trips. If your family was anything like mine, you may make the mistake of not checking your vehicle’s status before you leave. This could result in your family being stranded in the middle of nowhere in 100 degree heat, getting towed to the nearest town and forced to buy a whole new vehicle. Prevent that happening by following the tips below! If anything needs to be replaced or repaired, schedule a service appointment by clicking here. Our automotive technicians will have you squared away in no time.

  1. Check your fluids before you depart
  2. Oil, radiator fluid, brake fluid, power steering, transmission, it’s all vital for the well-being of your vehicle. Each have different mileage thresholds for when they need to be checked and replaced. Better be safe than sorry! Check to make sure levels are right and don’t need to be replaced before leaving.

  3. Tire Checks
  4. Ensure that the air pressure in each of your tires is at ideal levels before you leave. Not only will it improve fuel efficiency, but it will also help avoid a flat. Something else to consider is a tire rotation every 5,000-8,000 miles. Your tires wear down in different areas depending on where they’re located. Rotating the tires around ensures even wear and prolongs their life. Additionally, you can always do the Penny Test to make sure your tires are fit to drive in the first place.

  5. General Maintenance
  6. Does your vehicle have a screeching noise as you break? Your brake pads provide the friction used to bring your vehicle to a complete stop. Depending on the make, expect to replace them between 25,000 to 70,000 miles. Air filters need to be replaced more frequently, but they’re fairly inexpensive and help the quality of life of your engine and people in it. Lastly, check to make sure all your lights are in working order. Headlights, turn signals, and brake lights all need to be functioning for everyone’s safety and to avoid being pulled over.
